Congratulations on making a plan for your hip! So glad you got in with a good doc (who can relate to your lifestyle) and that the surgery will be soon. That should give you a good chunk of time for PT and strength training before the sailing season.

Hi Wade, I had to search what in the world FWQ is. Free ride world tour? You have operated at a higher level than me my friend. Perhaps it is time to keep your skis/board on the snow and preserve those joints as much as possible.

Unlikely I will be in Ellicottville, NY but certainly appreciate the offer. Keep having fun out there. Thanks for reading blog and commenting.

Thanks Scott. I have consulted with a couple of orthopedic surgeons and they have offered several knee extending solutions. I do ski in a brace which gives me some relief. Cortesone seems to work best.

I'm experiencing similar things, Scott. I'm 55 and until this season, was still competitive against 20-somethings in FWQ. There have been recent days I could barely walk, and effortless kick-turns are impossible now.

But hey, if you ever find yourself in Ellicottville, NY, email me. I get passes to Holiday Valley and Holimont.

Thanks for sharing the story and please keep me posted as you go through this. The story is really hits home for me especially the part about the tears in your eyes when skiing. My arthritic knee gets spun up and causes me the same kind of pain. I have been keeping it in the snow with NSAID’s, cortisone and Durolane shots (hyaluronic acid , basically a joint lubricant). I know I will be replacing the knee in the future, the question is when. It does fine for biking but skiing and hiking downhill are very hard on it. It was good to hear about your friend who is still crushing it with the replaced parts. Gives me hope. I am off to Utah and thenColorado in a week for 3 weeks of skiing. We shall see how the knee holds up. I do love retirement life. 😀
